Hey there.
Geoff:Welcome back to the "Faith & Family Filmmakers" podcast.
Geoff:My name is Geoffrey Whitt.
Geoff:I am the co-founder and co-director of Faith & Family Filmmakers Association,
Geoff:along with my wife Jaclyn, and obviously your host today on the
Geoff:"Faith & Family Filmmakers" podcast
Geoff:. And with me today I have Zach Miller.
Geoff:Zach is the director of Mosaic Christian Film Festival.
Geoff:Welcome, Zach
Zach:Thank you so much for having me.
Zach:I'm, I'm excited to speak with you about this event.
Zach:I know, um, we've been talking about this for a while, and so I'm excited
Zach:to share a little bit about it.
Zach:Yeah
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:Yeah, we're excited about Mosaic.
Geoff:It's a new festival and, you know, I was thinking about this earlier,
Geoff:every festival, the largest of them today, of course, had an inaugural
Geoff:year, and, uh, this is it for you.
Zach:That's true.
Zach:This is the first year, and so I'm excited for the guests that get
Zach:to be a part of our first year,
Zach:'cause,
Zach:you know, you get to make an f- impression once, so we're excited to do that.
Geoff:Let's start with the details.
Geoff:well, even before that, Zach, let's talk about you since you're
Geoff:a guest here on our podcast.
Geoff:tell us about yourself, uh, your history with film, how you got
Geoff:started, when you first became interested, those types of things
Zach:Totally, yeah.
Zach:I mean, I'm just starting to, you know, kinda cut my teeth on a lot of filmmaking.
Zach:Um, uh, I've been to
Zach:quite a few festivals in the past.
Zach:I've always really enjoyed gathering together with, with
Zach:like-minded, um, creators
Zach:and just people in the industry.
Zach:Um, from a young age, I had a huge interest in, in just media and,
Zach:um, storytelling and characters and, when I was really young,
Zach:I actually got into animation.
Zach:Uh, it was part of a mentorship program, television program that
Zach:kinda taught young people about media.
Zach:from there I went to, uh, different groups in high school where I, traveled to
Zach:different festivals and things like that, um, all while be-being taught different
Zach:filmmaking techniques and art styles.
Zach:And then, um, you know, COVID happened.
Zach:I actually took a little bit of a break from, the filmmaking lane.
Zach:I got into real estate then post-COVID kinda got back into it, started going
Zach:to more events, and just started, uh, you know, creating again.
Zach:Uh, networking, I think that's the most important thing we can do as creatives
Zach:is kind of, meet each other and be around people who are gonna encourage us.
Zach:Um, and then in 2024, I made a pilot actually for a, a sitcom.
Zach:It's about a homeschool co-op, so that was really fun.
Zach:I'd love to make the full series one day, but you know, that would be
Zach:like making two movies, so it takes a it takes a lot to make a TV show.
Zach:I know you guys have some involvement with different shows as well.
Zach:but I'd love to, I'd love to do that one day.
Zach:And then the-- You know, right now this is my biggest involvement in
Zach:filmmaking is starting this festival
Geoff:it's a big endeavor, for sure.
Geoff:and tell us where you live
Zach:I live in, uh, just outside Denver, Colorado in a
Zach:suburb called Lakewood, Colorado
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:So from there, let's get into the basics of the festival.
Geoff:Uh, location, dates, and we'll talk more about it, but, uh,
Geoff:let's get the basics down first.
Zach:Yeah, the basics, I mean, we, um… This is our first year.
Zach:It's gonna be held in, uh, Thornton, Colorado, which really is just outside
Zach:Denver, in between Denver and Boulder.
Zach:Uh, the reason for that is because the Sundance Film Festival, which is
Zach:the biggest in the United States, not the world, but definitely the biggest
Zach:in the United States, is permanently moving its location to Boulder.
Zach:And So when I heard that,
Zach:I was like, you know, starting a film festival was always something on my heart.
Zach:And so, um, I just felt like the perfect opportunity to, to take the leap of faith
Zach:and, Yeah, so it's gonna be the three days
Zach:leading into Sundance, and so it's a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
Zach:It's the 18th, 19th, and 20th of January.
Zach:Um, one of those days, the
Zach:Monday, is, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so that helps hopefully
Zach:with people's work schedules.
Zach:They can already have one of those days
Zach:off.
Zach:and yeah, it's in a city called Thornton, Colorado,
Zach:at a Delta by Marriott.
Zach:Um, all the screenings are gonna be held there, the award ceremony, and I'm working
Zach:with them on getting a, a good discount on that, and that'll probably be on the
Zach:website by the time this is released, so
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:That's great.
Geoff:So very smart move, tagging it onto the beginning of a very, very large festival.
Geoff:We see that, you know, uh, where other Christian festivals tag onto
Geoff:the beginning of a larger festival.
Geoff:Content's done it with, NRB.
Geoff:Very smart.
Geoff:Very different festival than, NRB, which is, uh, much larger, not totally
Geoff:focused on film, but very smart move, and they get lots of people
Geoff:who are coming for NRB, and they tag on the, the Content, one-day event.
Geoff:Uh, yours of course is a, a three-day event, but, um, I think that was a
Geoff:very smart move once you heard that Sundance was moving to your area
Zach:I'm excited about it.
Zach:I mean, if I went to a festival and Sundance was one day after, I'd
Zach:make my group stay an extra day or two, and we could go walk around.
Zach:I don't know if there's even tickets for, um, any Sundance movies yet, or
Zach:if, you know, the same audience would be interested in seeing any of them.
Zach:But it'd be fun to walk around, take a photo with anyone at Mosaic.
Zach:I'm planning on, you know, taking a photo at Sundance with everybody the next day.
Zach:And, you know
Zach:Colorado's got great skiing in January.
Zach:You can make a whole little vacation out of it, so
Geoff:yeah.
Geoff:so tell us about the festival itself.
Geoff:Uh, first of all, you've been taking submissions.
Geoff:Um, what are your categories?
Geoff:Are they still open?
Geoff:Or are they closed?
Zach:By the time this releases, we're, we'll be closed.
Zach:We, we are closed.
Zach:So, um, let me read them to you actually, because we have quite a few
Zach:for our first year we're excited about.
Zach:We've got feature film, of course, feature documentary, short film
Zach:narrative, short film documentary.
Zach:Those are the biggest four, um, for sure.
Zach:Then we've got, short film animation, um, music videos, TV
Zach:series/um, talk show series, um, short scripts, feature scripts, and then
Zach:students can enter in any of those.
Zach:Um, but then we have one specifically for student films as well.
Zach:Um, and then trailers as well.
Zach:So what was that?
Zach:10, 10 or 11?
Zach:Um, and then we're doing acting noms on top of that.
Zach:So, um, yeah, that's kind of a surprise actually.
Zach:That'll be coming out, um, with the nominations.
Zach:Nominations are released November 10th.
Zach:so yeah, we're excited to announce that as well.
Zach:That's kind of a… I haven't announced that anywhere, so if you're an actor in
Zach:any film that's been submitted to Mosaic, you might be getting a nomination, so
Geoff:Excellent.
Geoff:Cool.
Geoff:Um, tell us about, the festival itself.
Geoff:How many screening rooms will you have, uh, workshops, and those types of things.
Zach:Yes, between two to three screening rooms for every session,
Zach:and then I'm getting a lot of amazing speakers, so there might
Zach:have to be two at some sessions.
Zach:But, um, essentially there's four rooms that are gonna
Zach:be speakers and, uh, movies.
Zach:And so we're excited to, you know, just let people choose.
Zach:you know, if there's some speaker that they're really interested in
Zach:hearing, they can do that, and then just encourage them to see as many
Zach:movies as they can in the three days.
Zach:Um, they, they take place at the same time, intentionally so that
Zach:people can network and they're not, you know, missing each other.
Zach:Um, I built in some large lunch breaks and some large afternoon breaks
Zach:and dinner breaks so that people can have some time off to really
Zach:network and get to know each other.
Zach:Um, 'cause, you know, it's a, it's a little bit shorter.
Zach:It's three days, but I want people to really get the most out of it
Geoff:Yeah.
Geoff:there are certainly other festivals that are three days and, you know, especially
Geoff:starting out, um, it's a good length.
Zach:Yeah, it's, gonna be fun
Geoff:So regarding your workshops, tell us who your speakers are
Geoff:and what they'll be teaching.
Zach:Of course, yes.
Zach:Our, uh, keynote speaker is Andy Erwin.
Zach:We're excited to have him out there for our first year.
Zach:He's the, um, co-founder of Kingdom Story Company, and he most recently
Zach:directed I Can Only Imagine 2.
Zach:Um, he's got an amazing filmography, so we're stoked to
Zach:have, him from Kingdom come out.
Zach:Um, I'm just l- reading off my website.
Zach:The website's mosaicchristianfilmfestival.com.
Zach:Um, our SEO is not going amazing, but everything you see is us.
Zach:So the social media, the Instagram, the Facebook, the podcasts, that's all us.
Zach:So just, like, get your way to the website when you see something regarding
Zach:Mosaic Christian Film Festival.
Geoff:say it again, make sure we get that
Zach:Yes, mosaicchristianfilmfestival.com
Geoff:Okay.
Geoff:All the words all spelled out, mosaicchristianfilmfestival.com.
Zach:no nothing too
Zach:complicated.
Geoff:be easy to find.
Zach:another one of our speakers, his name's Jess Stainbrook.
Zach:he's an eight-time Emmy winner, executive producer of Seven Days in Utopia.
Zach:It's an older movie, that did really well in theaters.
Zach:Um, and he now does a lot of, digital content and helps companies
Zach:with their digital content.
Zach:Recently, he was a professor at, Colorado Christian University, and he does a lot
Zach:of work with the Super Bowl as well, so he's a great, um, speaker as well.
Zach:Um, Wally de la Fuente, he is the founder of Rediscover Television
Zach:and The Backlot.
Zach:Um, if you listen to this podcast, yeah, you know Wally as well as Jaclyn.
Zach:She's gonna be speaking.
Zach:We're super excited, uh, for her to share about, about FAFF and
Zach:everything you guys are doing.
Zach:Um-
Geoff:probably teaching screenwriting.
Zach:Yes, yes.
Zach:We have a lot of different, um, topics covered, so I'm hoping
Zach:she can cover screenwriting.
Zach:I mean, people really, value her screenwriting advice and
Zach:opinions, so I'm, I'm sure people will be excited to hear her.
Zach:Um, Tyler Sansom, you know him from FAFF as well.
Zach:Um, he's doing, uh, Backlot with Wally now, um, as well
Zach:as he did Purpose, last year,
Zach:and so if you went to
Zach:Purpose, you met him there
Geoff:Yes, a lot of our listeners and, uh, FAFF members
Geoff:went to Purpose last year.
Zach:Yeah.
Zach:Yeah, I know you guys, um, had a big i- influence on, on that event, so hopefully
Zach:everybody here remembers that one.
Zach:And I think they're, I think they'll get back to into it at one point, but,
Zach:um, I know it was postponed this year
Geoff:And it was and they, um, there has been some talk of them, um, actually doing
Geoff:it again even though they skipped a year.
Geoff:We'll see.
Zach:Totally.
Zach:Yeah.
Zach:No, these, these events are a lot.
Zach:I'm not gonna lie.
Zach:It's been-- I thought it would be more than I was expecting, and then it was,
Zach:and I'm like, "Okay. Yep, this is a lot." Um, some more speakers Joseph and
Zach:Stacy Graber, they're, local to Colorado.
Zach:Um, but they speak at Christian Worldview, Festival a lot.
Zach:Um, and they're, they run Thorn Crown Project, um, Thorn Crown Film
Zach:Project, so they're really great.
Zach:And then,
Geoff:Do you know what they're teaching
Zach:a filmmaking, couple filmmaking classes, kind of some,
Zach:some 101s and then documentaries.
Geoff:Okay, cool
Zach:But yeah, some 101 classes on filmmaking.
Zach:And then, um, Jared Lane is another one of our speakers.
Zach:He is a composer, film composer, so he'll be teaching on that.
Zach:Um, I think he spoke at Purpose as well, um, but I've known Jared forever.
Zach:We grew up together.
Zach:He was in my wedding, I was in his.
Zach:Same two weeks, we, like, alternated.
Zach:I got back and went straight to Buena Vista, or his wedding.
Zach:So, yeah, I'm excited to have, have Jared there.
Zach:and yeah, that's everybody announced.
Zach:We have some more announcements soon, but that's
Zach:everybody announced so
Zach:far.
Zach:But you can look up our social media for more speaker announcements coming up.
Geoff:Yeah, and stay tuned.
Geoff:Zach will be, taking part in one of our weekly meetups, and, uh,
Geoff:we'll also be doing, promotion.
Geoff:I guess we haven't said this yet.
Geoff:Jaclyn and I will be there.
Geoff:I guess you did already mention that she's a speaker.
Geoff:Uh, we'll be there, and, uh, we'll have a booth.
Geoff:We'll look forward to, hopefully seeing all of you there.
Geoff:Like, please plan for it.
Geoff:There's still lots of time.
Geoff:What's the date again?
Zach:The 18th, 19th, and 20th of January
Geoff:of January.
Geoff:So we're still, when this comes out, more or less three months away, and
Geoff:that's plenty of time to plan and get good flights and all that, type of thing
Geoff:if you're, not close enough to drive.
Geoff:And, we'll wanna see you there.
Geoff:It's gonna be fun.
Geoff:Gonna be a lot of fun.
Geoff:but we will keep you up to date between now and then on what's happening.
Geoff:If you've got announcements, Zach, with, new speakers or anything else, we'll,
Geoff:uh, we'll try and get them out to our,
Zach:Oh, awesome.
Geoff:listeners and our members
Zach:Yeah, I'm excited about it.
Zach:Yes.
Zach:we have a couple more speakers I, I just gotta confirm a few
Zach:details for, but that makes it kind of fun, the intrigue, you know?
Geoff:Yeah.
Geoff:that's just normal.
Geoff:I mean, everything we do, like we try and plan our bootcamp well in advance
Geoff:as far as starting, you know, contacting speakers and that type of thing.
Geoff:But it's, it's sometimes getting pretty close by the time some people
Geoff:are able to confirm, uh, because, you know, obviously these people have
Geoff:other things going on in their life.
Geoff:They have films sometimes that they have to, to actually make, and
Zach:Well, that's good.
Geoff:they don't, always know that far in advance whether
Geoff:they're gonna be available.
Geoff:So anyway, we'll look forward to those, updates
Zach:But it's, good to have people that are in the industry doing stuff
Geoff:Of course.
Zach:and not only going to, to networking events.
Zach:So that shows you have good people you, you work with that
Zach:are in the industry and working.
Zach:And yeah, I always try to make all the boot camps I can for FAFF.
Zach:It's… You guys get good
Zach:folks
Zach:involved
Geoff:So you mentioned thank you.
Geoff:You mentioned the hotel, the venue for the conference, uh, will also
Geoff:likely be a good spot to stay.
Geoff:It's obviously right on location.
Geoff:Is it an area where there's other hotels close by?
Zach:are, there are lots of hotels close by.
Zach:There's like three or four really big ones, a couple hundred rooms.
Geoff:Okay
Zach:a really big hotel kind of conference-y area.
Zach:Um, I think there's close to 20 restaurants in the parking lot.
Zach:Um, it's a big parking lot.
Zach:So you can, you can literally take an Uber from the Denver
Zach:Airport, probably 25, 35 minutes.
Zach:Um, stay on property.
Zach:I'm hoping to get tickets, don't hold me to this 'cause I'm still negotiating it.
Zach:I'm hoping to get tickets after fees under $100 a night,
Zach:um, for
Zach:each room.
Geoff:Good.
Geoff:If you do get that information, before we release this
Geoff:episode, please give them to us.
Geoff:We'll put the link uh, the link to the hotel as well as, of course, the link
Geoff:to, the festival in our show notes.
Geoff:So if you're listening to this, go check the show notes and get more information.
Zach:Yes.
Zach:So the, the hotel has lots of restaurants there.
Zach:I'm not offering meal plans because there's so many restaurants, and
Zach:I just kind of want people to network and invite each other to
Zach:different lunches, different dinners.
Zach:Our VIP ticket does come with one dinner, that is the Thursday night,
Zach:and that comes with an extra Q&A with Andy Irwin, um, to where, you know, you
Zach:It's a little bit more intimate setting.
Zach:Uh, but other than that, yeah, restaurants are gonna be, where people can really
Zach:make some good connections and, and hang out a lot, um, have some good food there.
Zach:So
Geoff:So there's lots of options nearby, you say?
Zach:Yeah, pretty much any, any option you can imagine is, is right there.
Zach:I mean, they're all chain restaurants, but there are options,
Geoff:cool.
Geoff:So is there anything else you'd like to add?
Geoff:Any information we haven't covered?
Geoff:Any details you'd like to make sure we know about before we clue this up?
Zach:Yeah, I mean, I guess just the, the essence of the event, I mean, that I wanna
Zach:really portray this first year, cause, you know, it's kind of setting a trajectory
Zach:for the rest of our events in the future.
Zach:I really want it to be, um, of course community-based, of course networking,
Zach:and I mean, that's any event.
Zach:But I want it to be kind of that, you know, not quite beginner
Zach:film camp level, but not quite such a huge, huge festival that
Zach:you're, you know, scared to even show up, right?
Zach:Get that kinda intermediate level of, um, people that are really trying
Zach:to up the quality of their work.
Zach:That's what I tried to convey with the branding of Mosaic.
Zach:It's about not only different pieces coming together in any film, um, like a
Zach:mosaic, but also just calling back to, you know, older, older times when the
Zach:church led the way in the arts, and when the church was known for its beautiful,
Zach:um, artistry everywhere, around the world.
Zach:the Christians were leading the path forward.
Zach:So
Zach:that's,
Zach:that's kind of what I'm, basing my branding off of my color palette, all
Zach:of that, is trying to allude to, is that it's, it's us encouraging each
Zach:other and upping the quality of what we're doing, at the same time.
Zach:So that's kind of the vibe I'm going for this first year, kind of our theme.
Zach:and I'm, I'm just really excited to get to encourage the filmmakers
Zach:who are brave enough to brave the snow with us in January.
Zach:It's gonna be great.
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:Yeah, Jaclyn and I are really looking forward to, um, like it sounds like with
Geoff:the, the lunch breaks and the dinner breaks and the, the times that you've
Geoff:set aside for networking, we're really looking forward to, the opportunity
Geoff:to be a part of community and to just build relationships with people.
Geoff:That's, as you know, that's a big part of what we do.
Geoff:So When we get out and get somewhere where we can do that in person, uh,
Geoff:that's really special, for us, so we're really looking forward to that.
Geoff:Would you share, the dates again
Geoff:and the
Zach:Yes
Geoff:website?
Zach:It's like a screenwriting rule, the, the rule of three.
Zach:You gotta say it three times in the script before they get it.
Zach:Yes, the website is mosaicchristianfilmfestival.com.
Zach:No dashes, no periods, anything, just mosaicchristianfilmfestival.com.
Zach:Um, if you look at our social media or our Film Freeway,
Zach:that links to it as well,
Zach:The dates are the Monday, Tuesday,
Zach:Wednesday,
Zach:uh, 18th, 19th,
Zach:and 20th of January, 2027, and then Sundance
Zach:starts on the Thursday.
Zach:So if you wanna stick around for a day, we'll be there
Geoff:Awesome.
Geoff:I just realized actually, um, we have a coupon code
Geoff:that I will put in the show notes.
Geoff:why not mention that right now?
Geoff:I'd, kind of forgotten.
Geoff:But, if you're listening and you're interested in registering, you can
Geoff:get 10% off by, looking in the show notes and finding the coupon code
Zach:And right now, early bird tickets are on sale for $175.
Zach:They go up to regular pricing, which is $200, um, November 10th.
Zach:So the code you talked about will work throughout the whole time,
Zach:but on top of that, you can get the early bird tickets as well.
Zach:Um, and that goes through November 10th.
Zach:So, yeah, you can kinda stack your discounts with that.
Zach:I'm trying to make it as affordable as I can for everybody traveling out.
Zach:but again, if you're, if you're waiting to find out more
Zach:logistics, that's totally fine.
Zach:The FAF throughout the entire process
Geoff:Sounds great.
Geoff:Well, we're excited about it.
Geoff:Thank you, Zach, for, uh, sharing with us today.
Geoff:As I mentioned, we will have Zach in one of our Thursday meetups.
Geoff:. I think it's our next networking event, uh, November 5th.
Zach:Oh,
Zach:perfect.
Zach:That'll be right before nominations come out, so that's great.
Zach:Yes,
Zach:I love it
Geoff:Yeah, and, uh, we will keep you up to date on the details.
Geoff:Thanks again, Zach, for sharing today.
Zach:Thank you so much for having me.
Zach:I really appreciate your time
